Emergency Preparedness

Fairmont staff and community are committed to providing and maintaining a safe, orderly, and attractive environment which promotes productivity and stimulates learning. Our school-wide safety plan, which is updated every year in October and March, fosters respect for all individuals and effectively utilizes available district and community resources.

We would like to make you aware of the plans we have made at the school in the event of a serious earthquake or disaster. Please read and save this information for future reference.

Each school year the staff reviews our school plans for earthquake/disaster preparedness. The staff is divided into assigned teams and has specific responsibilities to ensure safety for all students in the event of an earthquake or disaster.

The entire school regularly participates in fire drills, duck, cover, and evacuation drills, as well as lock-down drills. The children have been informed about where to go and what to do in the event of an emergency at school, whether they are in their classroom or elsewhere on the campus.

After a Serious Earthquake

If the telephones are operational following a serious earthquake, their use will be restricted to reporting medical, fire or other emergencies. Please DO NOT CALL THE SCHOOL. Information for parents will be released by radio on local news stations (KFI 640 and/or KNX 1070). Parents will be advised regarding school conditions, dismissal times, and procedures.

Picking Up Your Child

  • No child will be released to anyone other than his or her parents or persons listed on the current pink Fairmont Elementary School Preparedness Student Release Form. Please keep this information current.
  • The signature, destination, phone number, and address of any person signing a child out will be required before the child is released. Your cooperation will be necessary in signing your child out after a disaster. The school must account for each and every student. REMEMBER — Personnel could be needlessly injured searching for your child if his/her whereabouts are unknown.
  • Please minimize the possibility of traffic problems and facilitate the smooth release of children by walking to school when possible. Do not park in the front parking lot; it will be designated for emergency vehicles only.
  • The students will only be released from the front of the school (Fairmont Blvd. side) at the south end gate (not from the D-Village area).

Emergency Release Form

Please keep the information on your child’s emergency card current. We urge you as parents to have a home plan and an emergency kit for each car. We will all be safer if we plan ahead. We hope Fairmont does not have to implement our plan, but we want to assure you that we are prepared.
